Book Cover Design: A World On Fire

For Amanda Foreman's new book, a British epic of the American Civil War, Penguin's inhouse designers use three images of flags from the Bridgeman archive for the cover design, displaying that it was more than just a battle between the States.

In 'A World On Fire', Author of 'Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire' Amanda Foreman brings to life a dramatic account of the American Civil War and Britain's part in it.

During the titanic struggle between North and South, British volunteers fought on both sides and British guns and bullets littered the battlefields.

Three burning flags visualise Britain's part in the American Civil War

The cover design depicts three burning flags, dramatically visualising the part in the American Civil War played by not only the Confederates and the Union States but the British as well.

Going the extra mile. Working with our image partners

Interestingly the brief from Penguin's inhouse designers started off very differently and Bridgeman were able to source the images of American flags from the Civil War Archive that were not catalogued or on the Bridgeman website yet .

The flags in the resulting cover design are almost unrecognisable in their original guise. See below.
