Illustrator Aitch wins £1,000 book cover commission with The Borough Press, an imprint of HarperCollins, for her entry on the theme of “Night”
We are delighted to announce that the grand prize for the Bridgeman Studio Award 2016 goes to Aitch. The Romanian born illustrator wins a £1,000 front cover commission for Rosie Garland's new book published by the The Borough Press, an imprint of HarperCollins. The book will be released in both hardback and paperback in mid-2017.
The judging for the Bridgeman Studio Award 2016 was an incredible mix of styles, media and the highest levels of creativity
The judging took place in London on 14 July with Rosie Garland (Author), Claire Ward (Creative Director Fiction and Non Fiction - HarperCollins), Susie Doore (Publishing Director – The Borough Press), Patrick Burgoyne (Editor – Creative Review),Victoria Bridgeman (CEO Bridgeman images) and Lucy Baxter (Commercial Director – CultureLabel.com) selecting from a shortlist of 80 entries.
There was a wealth of talent on display but there could only be one winner.
Aitch's entry instantly captivated the judges, convincing them that they’d found an artist that could offer a commercially-driven and visually eye-catching cover design commission.

"I was stunned to discover that the Bridgeman Studio Award 2016 received almost 1000 entries, with 20 countries represented in the 80 shortlisted entries. I’m moved that so many artists found their imagination sparked by the idea of ‘Night’ and want to see their work on the cover of my book.
Although I’d like to have seen every entry, the time it took to review the shortlist showed me that would have been impossible. There was such an astonishing variety of work presented, and the task of choosing a winner took hours!
I am delighted that Aitch has won the commission. I really warmed to her submission. I am struck by the interplay of darkness and intense colour in her work. In particular, I love the way she visualises Night as more than monochrome. After all, Night can be the backdrop against which fireworks burn their brightest.”

They came so close! Runners up
Three runners up that came close to winning the BSA2016 this year were Robert Hunter, Isabel Grosse Holtworth and Mary Kuper who each will receive a £50 gift voucher from CultureLabel.com and a selection of books from HarperCollins.

Bridgeman Studio - a growing portfolio of contemporary art for licensing & commissions
Bridgeman Studio provides licensing and management for contemporary artists, offering copyright clearance, reproduction and marketing services for their images. It was launched in April 2014 and has a growing portfolio of accessible contemporary art for image licensing and creative commissions. Two years on they have 200 artists and nearly 14,000 images.
The Bridgeman Studio Award was launched in 2014 to uncover emerging image-making talent supported by Creative Review. Selected artists entering the competition have consequently been offered representation on the Bridgeman Studio platform.
