Collection Spotlight: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Located in the heart of Houston's museum district, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston boasts the title of the largest cultural institution in the southwest of America. The museum houses an encyclopedic collection of more than 65,000 works of art embracing every era of history across the globe.

Established in 1900, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston was the first art museum in Texas. Architects William Ward Watkin and James Chillman, Jr. chose the popular Neoclassical style for the museum's design.

The encyclopedic collections at the museum span time and place, covering world cultures from antiquity to modern times. These collections include detailed works of American art, European paintings, pre-Columbian and African gold, decorative arts and design, photography, prints and drawings, Modern and Contemporary painting and sculpture, and Latin American art.
