Mick Rooney RA (b.1944) is an English painter known for his imaginative story paintings.
Rooney's work explores the inner mythologies, neurosis, dreams and secrets of modern society. His paintings are inspired by everyday life and his travels around the world.
Born is Surrey in 1944, Rooney studied at Sutton and Wimbledon Colleges of Art, the Royal College of Art and The British School in Rome. He has had numerous solo and joint exhibitions across Europe and the US.
Throughout his career he has taught at various art colleges across the UK and was also the Head of Painting at the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected Royal Academician in 1991 and in 2001 was elected to the Royal Society of Painters and Printmakers.
His commissioned works include a wall mosaic for a new Basilica in Nazareth, Israel, a painting in honour of The Financial Times centenary in 1988, a poster for London Underground and a tapestry commissioned by TSB for Birmingham Headquarters. He also has work in the private collections of HM Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Paul McCartney and Royal College of Art.
