Interview: Piers Ottey

Piers Ottey was born in Wimbledon and trained at Chelsea College of Art in west London. Piers' early work focused on the body. As his practice developed he turned to the outdoors, with mountains and cityscapes providing particular inspiration.

Piers exhibits with Zimmer Stewart Gallery in Arundel and Highgate Contemporary, London. As one of our newest artists, we took the chance to ask Piers a few questions about his work and the images he has supplied to Bridgeman Images.

What inspires you?

If I had to wait for inspiration I might have to wait forever!!! I love painting ; I love looking ; I love life. I paint whenever I can, simples.

How would you sum up your practice in 5 words?

Mysterious, challenging, impossible but fabulous.

What is your favourite time of day to be in your studio?

Every time of day.. and night too.

How has Switzerland influenced your work?

Where I paint is about 2 miles above sea level. It is another world. I love looking down, I love looking up. I hate mediocrity.

Your studio in Hackney or your studio in Sussex?

Both. My heart is in both places. Hackney is tough, real vibrant and challenging. Sussex is scenic, comfortable, beautiful. The yin and the yang.

Camera or Canvas?

Either. Paintings come from passion for something. It matters not a jot whether the vehicle is a snap, a newspaper cutting or standing for a month in the landscape. If you don’t have the passion, you don’t have a painting!

Oil or Acrylic?

Acrylic - NEVER. Oil is alive. It has a third dimension. You can never tame it. Oil is THE medium.

Which other artists, dead or alive would you choose to have dinner with?

Giacometti and Bacon.

What brought you to Bridgeman for the licensing of your artwork?

The enthusiasm of Harriet Bridgeman!
