Winner of cover art competition announced

Congratulations go to Danielle Kemp for winning our competition to create a cover for one of five Man Booker Prize winning titles from the last 40 years

The competition, launched in celebration of the Library’s 40th year, was judged by Victoria Bridgeman, CEO of the Bridgeman Art Library with David Caines, Design Director for the Man Booker Prizes.

Victoria Bridgeman said 'This is an excellent design for both print and eBook format, where the strength of the image is used to maximum effect in a simple design. This winning design reveals the power of the image and the disciplined eye of the designer,  which benefits the whole. Minimum distraction, maximum impact'

'Effective crop of a beautiful image' David Caines, Design Director, Man Booker Prizes

Offering people the chance to win a copy of each of the Man Booker Prize 2012 long-listed novels and a printed canvas of their winning entry, the competition gave entrants access to Bridgeman Art Library’s extensive archives in order to recreate covers for G by John Berger, Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Keneally, The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje, Sacred Hunger by Barry Unsworth or The Life of Pi by Yan Martel.

A large number of submissions by entrants from the UK and abroad were reviewed by the judges, who noted a high level of creativity and a strong grasp of the needs of a stand-out book cover in today’s competitive industry.

What the Winner had to Say...

'Big and bold this amazing picture of a Bengal tiger on a vast sea of dazzling blue encapsulates the story in one eruption of energy. I love the shapes it throws and how the sinuous lines arabesque across the page. By concentrating on one image the design has an immediacy and arresting appeal. The word OF in the title reflects the curves of the tiger’s tail accentuating the flow of the image. The blue background stands for the watery journey of the tale.' Danielle Kemp

Runners Up

Our runners up for each Man Booker cover were Staven Andersen (Sacred Hunger & G) Chris Berry (Shindlers Ark) and Nial Smith (English Patient). More design entries can be seen via our Facebook page
