Jerzy Marek (1925-2014)

Bridgeman celebrates the life and legacy of our talented represented artist.

Day Dream, Jerzy Marek (1925-2014) / Private Collection / Bridgeman Images

"Jerzy Marek was a confident artist with a clear, defined sense of style. Transcending the boundaries of naïve and  folk art, he expertly captured the most domestic settings with a vivid imagination. Likewise, the wildest circus and the bloodiest of boxing battles were painted in a gentle wit and intimate manner.

Jerzy’s art was a constant favourite with our clients, with many choosing to license his work year after year." - Lucy Innes Williams, Bridgeman Contemporary Artists & Copyright

In Memoriam

Born in Poland in 1925, Jerzy Marek moved to London in 1948 after serving in the British Army during WWII. In 1983, he left his job as a civil engineer to pursue a full-time artistic career. He spent much of his leisure time nurturing the talent of other self-taught painters, including his mother-in-law and popular Bridgeman-represented artist Margaret Baird (1891-1979).

Entirely self-taught, he painted his colourful creations from memory. His initial subjects were sporting themes, later moving on to animals, interiors and pastoral landscapes.

Marek has exhibited in galleries around the world. His images in the Bridgeman archive have been licensed for books, magazines and maps by publishers in the UK, Europe and Hong Kong.
