John Opie, RA (St Agnes 1761 London 1807).
Oil painting on canvas, Willaim Matthews (1722 - 1799) by John Opie, RA (St Agnes 1761 London 1807), circa 1770-80. A half-length portrait, wearing dark blue coat. William Matthews of Burton (1722-1799) married Jane, heiress of Philip Hoskyns. The father of John Matthews by his wife Jane, daughter of Philip Hoskyns. He lived at Burton, in Linton, Herefordshire. His son presumably commissioned this portrait at the same time as his own, from Opie, whose study of Rembrandt made him particularly good at depicting old age.
