A Classical Landscape with Women Bathing

Johan van Haensbergen (1642 - The Hague 1705). Oil painting on oak panel, A Classical Landscape with Women Bathing by Johan van Haensbergen (1642 - The Hague 1705), bears Poelenburgh's intials: C.P. on rock at centre. On the left a pool in which a group of women are bathing; two others converse over a pile of washing in the right foreground; a ruined building lies in a valley, beyond which are distant hills. Formerly ascribed to Poelenburgh, but almost certainly by his pupil, Haensbergen. The positioning and accentuation of the signature are both suspicious, and the picture is clearly by the same hand as, for example, Haensbergen's Women Bathing in the Mauritshuis (No.135).
