Image description

The protagonists of this picture all seem to be enjoying a private joke. To the right of centre, Lord Hervey, the key of Vice-Chamberlain of the King's Household at his waist, indicates an architectural plan held up by the Surveyor-General of the King's Works, Henry Fox, later 1st Lord Holland. To the left, his brother Stephen, later 1st Earl of Ilchester, surreptitiously topples the chair on which stands the leading Freemason and scientist, the Rev. J.T. Desaguliers, who is focusing on a distant church (= benefice) through a telescope. The 3rd Duke of Marlborough and the politician Thomas Winnington look on from the right.
