This picture, taken at a Casualty Clearing Station in Normandy, shows an operation for a bullet wound in the abdomen. The wounded soldier was first given a blood transfusion to help him through the operation and the blood, which had been donated since D-Day, was bottled at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, and flown direct to the front. Blood for transfusions comes over in daily batches from the UK for use in front line medical dressing stations and casualty clearing stations. Picture issued June 1944.
