Image description

Gold Beach was the allied code name for one of the five (Omaha, Gold, Juno, Utah Beach and Sword) landing zones for the invasion of Normandy in World War II. The main goal was to capture the area between Port-En-Bessin and the Virerivier, after which it could be moved southwards in the direction of St Lo. The Germans, however, had well prepared their defense. In the end, it succeeded in breaking the German lines, but the landing on Omaha Beach led to large Allied losses. The division lost more than three thousand men.
