Image description

Best known for his scenes of rural Bucks County landscapes blanketed in snow, Edward Redfield was at the forefront of Pennsylvania Impressionism. After graduating from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, in 1889, he and his classmate Robert Henri (1865–1929) continued their studies in Paris, where they were introduced to the paintings of Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and other French Impressionists, who inspired Redfield to work directly from nature to create atmospheric landscape scenes. On his return to the United States, the artist settled in Center Bridge, a quaint village in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and later helped to establish the artist colony in nearby New Hope.
