Plettenberg Bay is the primary town of the Bitou Municipality in the Western Cape Province of South Africa; Beacon Island is so called on account of the stinkwood navigational beacon that was first erected there in 1771; The hotel that can be seen on Beacon Island was built in 1940 by Hugh Owen Grant, and was replaced by a larger construction in 1972;
