Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa (1831-1915) was an Irish Fenian leader and prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood; At his funeral at the Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin on August 1 1915 Patrick Pearse (1879-1916) gave an inflammatory graveside oration that was a significant factor in the lead-up to the Easter Rising of 1916; The famous climactic closing words of the oration were "Ireland unfree shall never be at peace"; Pearse can be seen to towards the right of this photograph, in uniform, putting his famous speech into his pocket; Pearse was later executed for his role as one of the architects of the Easter Rising;
