Galerie Durand-Ruel was run by a French family of art dealers; Paul Durand Ruel (1831–1922) was one of the most influential forces behind the promotion and sale of 19th-century French painting, especially the Barbizon and Impressionist painters, a market for which he developed among wealthy American collectors; he was one of the first modern art dealers who provided support to his painters with stipends and solo exhibition and was responsible for the successful promotion of many artists, including Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley; the gallery at 103, rue des Petits Champs opened in 1839 and closed in 1974;
