Image description

Sosnowska is an active interpreter of Modernism’s utopian ideals, whose examples in Eastern Europe, however, are now in ruins. Stairs was made during the artist’s first residency in the United States. It is not a ready-made but an actual sculpture and an exact copy of a component of fire-escape stairs made with the assistance of metal fabricators. The newly rendered stairs were carefully bent with the use of forklifts, then painted with enamel oil-based paint, giving it the surreal look of a beautiful yet useless object. The artist further transformed the work by hanging the sculpture on a wall where, notwithstanding its weight and factual creation, it can be read as a drawing, a cross, an oversized insect, and more. Stairs emphasizes architecture itself, with an image of an accessory that is usually ignored and yet is functional and lives in plain sight.
