Image description

Wilson was one of the first British artists to concentrate on painting landscapes. He produced a number of variations of this view of the River Dee in Cheshire stretching to the Welsh hills in the distance. This example includes three figures idling by the water’s edge. The golden light imbues the composition with the Italian quality, recalling Wilson’s trip to Italy in 1750-7 as well as his admiration for the paintings of the seventeenth-century artist Claude Lorrain.
