Image description

As well as self portraits, Fergusson's family provided the sitters for a number of his earliest experiments with oil . The subject and the subdued colours suggest the ongoing influence of Whistler (1834-1903) while the lack of detail is typical of Fergusson's broad brushwork even when working on a small scale. Fergusson wrote of Whistler, 'His art...was the twilight, the Celtic twilight brought to Chelsea. It was too, like the Fiona MacLeod white wind blowing through everything. It was not gloom or dirt. It was the white mist, and compared to the art of the time in Britain, amazing and charming'. On his death in 1961 Fergusson left the largest collection of his works in existence to his partner, Margaret Morris (1891-1980). In 1963 she established the JD Fergusson Art Foundation, who subsequently gifted the entire collection, archive and copyright to Perth and Kinross District Council in November 1991.
