Image description

A naturally gregarious personality, Fergusson was attracted to paint in Princes Street Gardens on many occasions during his formative years in Edinburgh. Here he focuses on a specific landmark as the basis for an atmospheric sketch in oils. The influence of both Whistler and the French Impressionists is evident. Talking of oil Fergusson described it, 'as a medium to express the beauty of light on surfaces, what we used to call in Scotland 'quality of paint' - with solidity and guts! - not drawing a map-like outline and filling in the spaces with an imitation of the object with the paint'. On his death in 1961 Fergusson left the largest collection of his works in existence to his partner, Margaret Morris (1891-1980). In 1963 she established the JD Fergusson Art Foundation, who subsequently gifted the entire collection, archive and copyright to Perth and Kinross District Council in November 1991.
