Image description

This study of farm buildings shares a similar approach to the late study 'Chimney Pots' (1992.301). Both are unusual in terms of the degree of abstraction with which Fergusson experiments. He tackled a wider range of subject matter than the other Colourists but rarely treated it in terms of its formal values alone. Both of Fergusson's parents came from Perthshire farming backgrounds and this may well have influenced his lifelong love of nature and working in rural surroundings. There is however, no indication given in the work's title to suggest whether it was inspired in Scotland or France. On his death in 1961 Fergusson left the largest collection of his works in existence to his partner, Margaret Morris (1891-1980). In 1963 she established the JD Fergusson Art Foundation, who subsequently gifted the entire collection, archive and copyright to Perth and Kinross District Council in November 1991.
