Image description

"A letter to Morris from Fergusson explains the inspiration for this carved portrait made in the garden of his mother's Edinburgh home. 'The sculpture on the whole is going very well... The new stand I made is quite a success...Tell K. I'm putting the feeling of the last time I saw her, into my sculpture - full and round'. A letter to Morris from Fergusson explains the inspiration for this carved portrait made in the garden of his mother's Edinburgh home. 'The sculpture on the whole is going very well... The new stand I made is quite a success...Tell K. I'm putting the feeling of the last time I saw her, into my sculpture - full and round'. The K. that Fergusson refers to was Kathleen Dillon, one of Morris's dance students that he had met in London. He had painted a portrait of her called 'Rose Rhythm' (private collection) the previous month. The links between portrait and sculpture are enhanced by the rose-coloured stone chosen."
