Title
Paul Mellon One Man's England
Medium
16mm
Date
1978 (C20th)
Description
Paul Mellon at the Yale University Center for British Art, a gift from Mr. Mellon. The camera focuses on the many paintings, drawings, books and sculpture he has given to the museum, and how they illustrate his passion for British culture. He talks with arts writer and lecturer Rosamond Bernier. The center and its contents reflect one man's efforts collecting the work of centuries. Mr. Mellon (class of 1929) lived in England for a time and eventually amassed the greatest collection of this kind anywhere outside Britain. The museum building is the last major work of architect Louis Kahn. Some of the artists represented: Rowlandson, Gainesborough, Joshua Reynolds, Constable, Francis Wheatley, Stubbs, Turner; and some works by artists who -- as Mr. Mellon and Ms. Bernier agree -- may qualify as “honorary Englishman” because they worked there at some point in their lives: Van Dyck, Canaletto, and Rubens.
