Film director Hitchcock discusses his life and career in long talks with (1) Pia Lindstrom (newscaster and daughter of Hitchcock star Ingrid Berman) and with (2) film historian William Everson. Excerpts from several films iillustrate these interviews. (1) "Dial M for Murder","Strangers on a Train", " Foreign Correspondent", "Young and Innocent", "Spellbound", "Notorious", "Stage Fright", "I Confess", "The Birds", "Psycho", "Frenzy", "The 39 Steps". Discussion topics include: what is fear?, method acting vs. film acting, the difference between the usual "Who Done It" mystery and what he considers to be real suspense. His choice of leading ladies and why (Bergman, Baxter, Kelly, Marie Saint, Leigh, etc.). Humor as a release in a tense situation. (2) Footage from unreleased Hitchcock film, with comments on Hitchcock's background and the early influences on his work. "Number Seventeen", "The Lodger". "The Man Who Knew Too Much." "The Birds" . Hitchcock/Everson explaining the process of shooting "Number Seventeen". How Hitchcock got to Hollywood, his first project. "Notorious" excerpt.
