Image description

A white horse, profile right, on the sea shore. The tail arched, the off fore-front leg raised. A raven on a rock, right, and the setting sun 'Marengo' was the charger ridden by Napoleon at the Battle of Marengo in 1800 and subsequently at Austerlitz, Jena, Wagram and finally, Waterloo. Wounded in the hip, 'Marengo' was obtained by Lord Petre and subsequently sold to J.J. Angerstein, dying in 1831 aged 36. His skeleton is in the collection of the National Army Museum, London.
