Posthumous Portrait of Jane Lavery. Sir John Lavery (1856-1941). Oil on canvas board. Inscribed 1876 by her brother John 1935. 20 x14in. A portrait of the artist's sister who committed suicide. this is a posthumous portrait of my only sister – she was driven mad because of her terror of bearing more children added to the fact that when she was in great distress and at her wits end I refused to help her. She rose from the side of her husband in the early hours of the morning and threw herself of the Stockwell Street Bridge, Glasgow when she was about 22 years of age. Remorse comes later.
