Arnulf Rainer first developed the 'Face Farce' series in an automatic photo booth at the train station in Vienna. Once inside the booth, Rainer worked up his facial muscles to a point of intense agitation, believing it tapped into channels of the irrational self. Rainer later rephotographed and handcoloured these images as a way to amplify the expression captured by the photograph.
