Image description

This painting shows the mine at Botallack, near St Just, where nine men and a boy had been killed in 1863. The men's heads are portraits of real Cornish miners. From Under the Sea reflects typical Victorian themes. Family unity is celebrated in the delivery of a meal by a miner's dutiful wife and children. The nobility of manual work is also emphasised through Hook's heroic figure composition. Hook addressed a growing urban market for seascapes; his coastal views became known as 'Hookscapes'.
