London Docks: Building Caissons For Mulberry, 1944 (oil on canvas)

Creator: Macdonald, Frances (1914-2002) A general view of the London Docks with three large caissons in the background, Wapping, London, 1944. Several wooden planks float in the water in the foreground and a dockworker waits on a jetty for a boat full of other workers to arrive. Frances Macdonald trained at the Royal College of Art and was one of the longest-serving official war artists of the Second World War. She painted many subjects including St Paul's Cathedral, the London Docks, nursing scenes, and street scenes, although many were denied public display at the time. Several of her works are held by Imperial War Museums.
