Creator: Macdonald, Frances (1914-2002) A dry dock with a large scaffold erected next to the quay, surrounded by several cranes and gas tanks in the background, Wapping, London, 1944. Construction workers are busy in the foreground. Frances Macdonald trained at the Royal College of Art and was one of the longest-serving official war artists of the Second World War. She painted many subjects including St Paul's Cathedral, the London Docks, nursing scenes, and street scenes, although many were denied public display at the time. Several of her works are held by Imperial War Museums.
