The New Admiralty Building, Whitehall, 1945 (watercolour, ink on paper)

Creator: Macdonald, Frances (1914-2002) A rooftop scene showing the new Admiralty Citadel built in 1941 and Whitehall on the left, opposite the corner of St James's Park, London, 1945. Immediately behind it is the Old Admiralty building, with the large parade ground of Horse Guards to the right. In the distance, the grand towers of Whitehall Court are visible. Frances Macdonald trained at the Royal College of Art and was one of the longest-serving official war artists of the Second World War. She painted many subjects including St Paul's Cathedral, the London Docks, nursing scenes, and street scenes, although many were denied public display at the time. Several of her works are held by Imperial War Museums.
