Galaxies NGC 3718 in the Great Bear - Galaxy NGC 3718 in Ursa Major - NGC 3718 (Arp 214) is a special galaxy located about 42 million years ago - light from the Earth in the constellation Big Bear. It's an active nucleus galaxy. Its tormented form is probably due to the attraction exerted by another galaxy, NGC 3729 (off-field). On the right, Arp 322 (or Hickson 56), is a group of 5 galaxies far farther away, located about 300 million years from Earth. NGC 3718 (Arp 214) seems to have a rudimentary bar and spiral structure although it is recognized as a peculiar galaxy and as such is listed within ARP's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. Large and Small Magellan Clouds - Large and Small Magellanic clouds - These two irregular galaxies are close to our galaxy. Visible in the southern hemisphere, they are located approximately 160,000 (Grand Cloud, right) and 240,000 light years (Small Cloud, left). The Magellanic Clouds are the nearest galaxies to the Milky Way, about 170,000 and 240,000 light years distant respectively. They are in the far southern sky, practically invisible from northern latitudes, and their low surface brightness makes them difficult to see unless they are high in the sky. Both Magellanic Clouds are less than 25 degrees from the South Celestial Pole and are visible at some time on any clear, dark night from Siding Spring, where this picture was taken. To the dark adapted eye the Magellanic Clouds look like detached pieces of the Milky Way, but this apparent detachment is misleading because both are in orbit around it. It belongs to the Virgin's galaxy cluster. Above the galaxy a dwarf elliptical galaxy, probably interacting with M100. This image was obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This dominant galaxy is the face - on spiral M100, one of the finest spirals in the Virgo cluster. As might be expected in a galaxy - rich environment, the lack of perfect symmetry in its brightest spiral arms suggests that M100 has been disturbed by gravitational interaction with its neighbours. At the top of the image is the first colour picture of a much less spectacular galaxy, a so - called 'nucleated dwarf' elliptical galaxy, probably interacting with M100. Image obtained by the WISE telescope (Wide - field Infrared Explorer). This image from Nasa's Wide - field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, highlights several star - forming regions. There are five distinct centers of star birth in this one image alone. Star - forming nebulae (called HII regions by astronomers) are clouds of gas and dust that have been heated up by nearby stars recently formed from the same cloud. This one, called CG4 (left middle of the image), is located about 1300 light years away in the constellation Pupus. Its head is 1.5 years light and its tail extends for 8 years. This cloud is a star-forming region. A spiral galaxy seen by the slice (ESO 257 - 19) is visible to the left of the blood cell. It is located 100 million years later. At the bottom left of the image, another galaxy is visible, NGC 2427. This region of the southern sky has numerous colorful faint gaseous nebulae that are very difficult to image due to thier very low surface brightness.
