A bright yellow star is in the foreground. This cluster is one of many in the sparkling southern constellation of Scorpius. It is marked by a bright yellow star (spectral type K5) which happens to be in the foreground at a distance of about 1000 light years. The cluster itself is about 3,500 light years from the sun. The cluster is slightly dimmed by foreground dust. This so - called interstellar extinction is common with object close to the Galactic plane. Two Albanian brothers Thanassis Lazar Nicola and Christakis Lazar Nicola were working aboard a small motor ship “Dinamo” in which they were to take supplies to coastguards near Avlona. Aboard the” Dinamo” was also 68 year old Captain Vassili Kotsi and two young Albanian soldiers. The brothers doped the Captain and the soldiers - and set sail for Greece. Globular cluster M13 - Hercules cluster - The Great Globular Cluster in Hercules M13 - M13 (NGC 6205), extends for about 150 years - light and is approximately 25,000 years - light from Earth in the constellation of Hercules. These stars are packed so closely together in a ball, approximately 150 light - years across, that they will spend their entire lives whirling around in the cluster. Near the core of this cluster, the density of stars is about a hundred times greater than the density in the neighborhood of our sun. These stars are so crowded that they can, at times, slam into each other and even form a new star, called a “blue straggler.” The brightest reddish stars in the cluster are ancient red giants. The image covers an area 672 km wide and shows the two huge dune fields located south-west of Libya in the Fezzan Desert. At the top of the picture, the Ubari erg (or Awbari) appears reddish. In the middle, Murzuk erg. This Envisat image shows two huge sand dune seas in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya, close to the border with Algeria. Most of the face of the Sahara desert stretching across Northern Africa is bare stone and pebbles rather than sand dunes, but there are exceptions - sprawling seas of multi - storey sand dunes known as 'ergs'. The Erg Ubari (also called Awbari) is the reddish sand sea towards the top of the image. A dark outcrop of Nubian sandstone separates the Erg Ubari sand from the Erg Murzuq (also called Murzuk) further south.
